Construction will begin today along Ortega Hill Road in Summerland as workers install sidewalks and make other roadway improvements between Evans Avenue and the northbound Highway 101 onramp.
The $300,000 project, which includes installing curbs, sidewalks, drainage facilities, landscaping, bicycle lanes and additional parking, is part of a multiphase plan to improve pedestrian access in downtown Summerland, Santa Barbara County officials said.
Traffic will be permitted along the roadway, but delays of 10 minutes can be expected from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the duration of the project, which is expected to wrap up in December.
"The groundbreaking on these improvements to the Summerland Business District is the result of years of dedicated work," First District Supervisor Salud Carbajal said in a prepared statement. "Along with the upcoming Summerland Community Plan update, this project will significantly enhance pedestrian access, parking, traffic circulation, and landscaping in this beautiful and unique community."
County officials and Supervisor Carbajal will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 9 a.m. on Thursday and residents are welcome to attend.
