Deputies arrest kidnapping suspect

DAILY SOUND STAFF REPORT

Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 32-year-old man after he allegedly kidnapped and beat his mother Wednesday morning before she was able to escape and call authorities.

Dispatchers received a 911 report of a woman screaming in the area of Cheltenham Road early in the morning, sheriff’s officials said, but deputies were unable to find any signs of a dispute.
Soon after that call, police received another call from a man who hung up after a woman started screaming in the background, Sgt. Alex Tipolt said. Minutes later, a third 911 call came in, this time from the victim.
“…the caller identified herself as a victim of a kidnapping,” Sgt. Tipolt said in a news release. “The caller added that she had been severely beaten, although [she] was able to escape from her captor.”
After tracking her down, authorities requested medical assistance and asked about her attacker. The victim told deputies her son, identified as Gregory Patchett, Jr., had kidnapped and attacked her, Sgt. Tipolt said.
Deputies spotted Patchett driving in the Montecito area and authorities attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Sgt. Tipolt said, but he sped away.
“A pursuit developed through the streets of Montecito and Summerland,” he said. “Due to the high speeds and concentration of civilian traffic in the morning hours, in addition to the erratic and carelessness of safety by Patchett, the pursuit was terminated in the interest of public safety.”
Deputies later tracked down Patchett at a home in the 2600 block of Tallant Road and took him into custody without incident, authorities said.
He was booked into County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail for kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, dissuading a witness, making threats, disabling a telephone line, violating a protective order and evading officers.
