A slate of single-family homes, commercial buildings and institutional facilities earned recognition from Santa Barbara city leaders yesterday for installing solar energy systems.
Officials selected projects that exemplified the city’s solar design guidelines, which promote aesthetic considerations in addition to efficient energy use.
“These are the types of projects that will truly inspire others to install solar,” said Heather Baker, a city planner.
Five solar projects in particular stood out in their respective categories, she said, and deserved plaques designed by Brian Chandler, a local solar pyrographer who uses a magnifying glass to burn designs into wood.
Those earning the city’s highest award included the Vapnek Family’s residence on Garden Street, David Vanderlaan’s home on Westmont Road, Jeff and Yvette Giller’s home on Las Canoas Road, the Cottage Hospital Child Care Center, and St. Mary’s Retreat House.
Contractors involved with those five projects, in addition to those involved in 17 other projects that received certificates of recognition, also earned a nod from the city for their role in promoting renewable solar energy.
The city’s Fire Station No. 2 and Marina 1 were among commercial or institutional facilities recognized for their solar systems.
“To say that solar is blossoming everywhere is just an understatement,” Mayor Marty Blum said, congratulating all those recognized yesterday.

FYI-the local solar business, Mac's Solar, received 6 awards for its outstanding installation of solar energy systems. Mac's Solar is owned by Santa Barbara natives, Mike and Cheryl McRae, and has been in business in Santa Barbara for over 30 years.
