Police blotter

DAILY SOUND STAFF REPORT

Aug. 26, 4:30 p.m. — After driving around town on a round of errands, a 49-year-old Santa Barbara man called police to report his car as missing. He told authorities he made several stops when he noticed his sunglasses were missing. After making more stops in an attempt to find his sunglasses, he told officers he forgot where he had parked his car.

The man said he suffers from memory loss or forgetfulness when he is stressed out. Police gathered information about his trip around town, including several stops in city parking lots and in a 15-minute parking zone near the library, but could not locate the vehicle. A records check also confirmed that it was not towed.

Aug. 27, 5:50 p.m. — Police received reports of a man drinking in a car in the 1100 block of Castillo Street and arrived to find the subject as described in an alley near a preschool with children on the campus. Officers noticed the 34-year-old man was attempting to conceal a half-full, cold can of Bud Light beer between his ankles as he sat in the back seat.
A records check on the suspect revealed a felony warrant out for his arrest for failing to appear in court for a prior arrest involving possession of a controlled substance and driving under the influence. Police handcuffed the man and conducted a search, discovering a bindle of white powder in his pocket. The suspect admitted it was his “coca.”
Authorities arrested the man for possession of cocaine, transportation of a controlled substance and possession of an open container in a motor vehicle, in addition to the outstanding warrant. Officers booked him into jail in lieu of $30,000 bail.

Aug. 28, 10:01 p.m. — An officer on uniformed patrol near Oak Park spotted a man riding his bike along Junipero Street and stopped him for a traffic violation. The 29-year-old Santa Barbara resident consented to a search. The officer discovered two blue Xanax pills in the man’s pocket and determined he did not have a valid prescription.
As the investigation continued, the officer noted the suspect appeared to be under the influence of narcotics. A subsequent urine sample tested positive for opiates, marijuana, benzodiazepines and amphetamines.
Authorities took the 29-year-old, who was on probation for other drug-related incidents, into custody for violating his probation, being under the influence of narcotics and possession of a controlled substance. He was booked in lieu of $2,500 bail.

Aug. 30, 12:28 a.m. — Police pulled over a 22-year-old woman in the 300 block of W. Figueroa Street as she backed up her vehicle. Officers recognized the suspect from a loud party they had handled half an hour earlier. During the party, police had observed the suspect exhibiting symptoms of intoxication. Authorities arrested, cited and released the 22-year-old for driving under the influence.

Aug. 31, 5:49 p.m. — After arriving in the 300 block of W. Mason Street for a reported hit-and-run, police learned that the involved vehicle was a blue Ford Ranger truck. Witnesses also provided officers with the license plate number. After a quick records check, authorities tracked down the 53-year-old owner of the truck in the 100 block of W. Mason Street.
They located the vehicle and found it had minor damage consistent with a collision. Based on their investigation, officers arrested, cited and released the driver for DUI and hit-and-run.
