Authorities released the names of the three pedestrians hit in a downtown Santa Barbara crosswalk on Sunday, but have yet to comment on the cause of the collision.
Estelle Ashkenazi, 54, and her two sons, Janone, 18, and Ilan, 14, were hit by a Kia Optima driven by 65-year-old Patricia Blatt as they crossed Carrillo Street at State Street on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Ilan remains in extremely critical condition in Cottage Hospital's Intensive Care Unit with a severe head injury, Police Spokesman Lt. Paul McCaffrey said. The mother's condition has been upgraded to good, he added.
Janone, a UC Santa Barbara freshman, received injuries that were "much less serious than first feared," McCaffrey said, adding that he was released from the hospital on Monday.
Police are still conducting their investigation, McCaffrey said, and asked any witnesses of the collision to contact Traffic Investigator Mark Hunt at 805-897-3719.

so, one more open space for transients to occupy...just like the library plaza across the street. is this the council's way of making us all regret any open space, since it is fast becoming de facto homes for transients from all over?
