UPDATE: Power has been restored to UCSB and neighboring areas as of Thursday afternoon, according to university officials. Authorities warn that conditions at the Gap Fire still have the potential to cause a similar outage.
Due to the Gap Fire, UC Santa Barbara was without power last night, July 2. Power was restored to most of the campus by midnight, but portions of Isla Vista and the West Campus were still without power as of mid-morning.
The campus is safe and secure, and classes are running as scheduled.
Approximately 5,000 students and conference participants are housed at UCSB at this time. Parents who wish to inquire about children who are on campus for summer camps are encouraged to call the individual camps.
UCSB will be providing accommodations for firefighters and a staging area for fire strike teams. Southern California Edison has requested that the campus and surrounding communities conserve power.
Updates will be posted at www.ucsb.edu. For more information, please call UCSB's toll-free emergency phone line: 1-888-488-8272. The recorded message will be updated throughout the day.
