The 54-year-old man who was struck and killed in the northbound lanes of Highway 101 Tuesday night has been identified by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff Coroner as Rick Steven Michel of Santa Barbara.

Michel was struck near the La Cumbre Street overpass just before 8 p.m.
California Highway Patrol officials said Michel was a known transient and several homeless encampments exist along the Highway 101 corridor between La Cumbre Road and Milpas Street, although it is not known if Michel was residing in one of them.
Michel’s death brings the number of homeless people who have died on the streets of Santa Barbara this year to 11.
