California Highway Patrol officials say a woman driving southbound on Highway 101 near Casitas Pass Road in Carpinteria at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday was injured when her side window shattered after being hit with a rock.
Don Clotworthy, a CHP spokesman, said an investigation revealed a 13-year-old male from Carpinteria was the suspected rock thrower.
“CHP investigators suspect that the juvenile was throwing rocks up onto the southbound lanes of US 101 from a bike trail which runs underneath the freeway just south of Casitas Pass Road,” Clotworthy said.
He said the 23-year-old driver of the Land Rover drove herself to Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital where she was treated for facial cuts caused by glass fragments.
Clotworthy said the case remains under investigation and the CHP will likely seek felony charges in Juvenile Court against the young suspect.
