After being appointed the Chair of the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors yesterday, First District Supervisor Salud Carbajal vowed to promote a collegial atmosphere among the board and strive to create an inviting environment for the public to address county related issues.
“I’m looking forward to a good year of continuing to work with my colleagues to address all of the challenges we’re facing in county government,” Carbajal said.
Carbajal, 41, who will be campaigning for a second term on the board this year, served as the board’s co-chair beneath the board’s former chair, Third District Supervisor Brooks Firestone. Firestone has announced he will not seek reelection to the board this November.
Carbajal said the main challenge facing the county this year will be budget-related issues, which were the highlight of the year’s first board meeting yesterday. At that meeting, the board voted 4-1 to divert $3.4 million from the county’s strategic reserve to the Sheriff’s Department to help pad a $3.7 million deficit.
