Police probe suspected gang shooting

Detectives are continuing to investigate a suspected gang-related shooting in Santa Barbara that sent two men to the hospital with gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Residents in the 400 block of De la Vina Street reported a fight occurring in front of a home late Friday evening, Lt. Dave Whitham said. When one person went inside to call police at approximately 11:30 p.m., they heard what they believed were several gunshots, he said.
“Officers got to the scene and nobody was there,” Lt. Whitham said. “Suddenly, we get a call to Cottage Hospital for two people there with gunshot wounds.”
Detectives spoke with both victims, a 28-year-old man and an 18-year-old man, and worked through the night on the investigation, authorities said. Lt. Whitham said one victim remains in critical but stable condition.
“One of them had a serious wound and the other one had a minor wound,” he said. “…We do not have a homicide.”
Lt. Whitham did not know whether either victim is a suspected gang member, but said the shooting is being considered gang-related. He said detectives are continuing their investigation and could not say if any suspects have been identified.
